Thickened and fungal toenails: what they are and how I can help

Before and after fungal and thickened toenail treatment — Hessle foot health clinic

Thickened, discoloured or crumbly toenails are something I see every week, and they're nothing to feel embarrassed about. They become more common as we get older, and can follow a knock to the nail, a fungal infection, or conditions that affect circulation.

A fungal nail often looks yellow or white, may thicken, and can lift or crumble at the edges. Thickened nails on their own can simply be hard to cut and uncomfortable in shoes.

At your appointment I carefully reduce and thin the nails to make them more comfortable and easier to manage, tidy the edges, and give you honest advice on keeping them in good shape — including the over-the-counter treatments that can help with fungal nails. Regular care every few weeks usually keeps things comfortable.

If you're not sure what's going on with a nail, just get in touch — nail care is part of every foot health check-up and treatment. You'll find more answers on the FAQs page.
