Ingrowing toenails: causes, relief and prevention

2 June 2026

Foot Health Practitioner treating a toenail at the Hessle clinic, East Yorkshire

An ingrowing toenail happens when the edge of the nail grows into the surrounding skin, causing pain, redness and sometimes infection. The big toe is most often affected.

What causes them

Common causes include cutting nails too short or rounding the corners, tight footwear, a nail that curves naturally (an involuted nail), or a knock to the toe. Sweaty feet can soften the skin and make it easier for the nail to pierce.

Easing the discomfort

I provide careful, conservative care to clear the troublesome edge and relieve the pain, and I will show you how to cut your nails to help prevent it returning (straight across, not too short). For suitable nails I will also be offering gentle, non-surgical nail bracing soon.

When to seek help sooner

If the toe is very swollen, weeping, or you have diabetes or circulation problems, it is best to get it looked at promptly — contact me or your GP.
